Nov 21, 2023Greg Noseworthy expected to be named new Ward 3 councillor for St. John's | CBC News
Greg Noseworthy is expected to be elected councillor of Ward 3 in the City of St. John's, according to results shared by the city shortly before 9:30 p.m. NT on Tuesday.
Noseworthy — who received 1,940 votes or 42.7 per cent of the total— defeated candidates Mark House, Walter Harding, Scott Fitzgerald and Paul Morgan.
Harding finished with 958 votes, Fitzgerald with 837, Morgan had 491 votes and House finished with 319.
A spokesperson for the city told CBC News the preliminary voter turnout was 28.7 per cent.
The city says the results are unofficial for now, but the official byelection results will be certified by the Office of the City Clerk by Thursday.
Tuesday marks the third time Noseworthy has appeared on the ballot for a municipal election in the city. The St. John's lawyer ran for Ward 3 in 2021 and Ward 2 in 2020.
Noseworthy sits on the St. John's Seniors Advisory Committee and wants to make changes to how the city addresses rising costs of living. In an interview with CBC News in October, Noseworthy said public safety was also a key point of focus and that he wants to see changes to speeding laws around the Waterford Valley.
The byelection was triggered after Jamie Korab, who had been councillor since 2017, made the jump to provincial politics. Korab now serves as the Liberal MHA for Waterford Valley.
